English review

André Novais experiments with science fiction and magical realism in If I Were Alive, a feature as entertaining as it is delicate, approaching grief through poetic perspectives in a personal exercise in family therapy between father and son.

I remember my first encounter with André Novais Oliveira's cinema as if it were yesterday, at the 2023 São Paulo International Film Festival. On a day when I watched four films at Espaço Petrobrás de Cinema - which went by a different name at the time - I decided to walk into feature film screenings without reading the synopses, as a cinematic adventure. I saw that a Brazilian film was being screened that afternoon and chose to fit it into my schedule, without any idea what it was about. It was The Day I Met You, a sweet romantic comedy grounded in reality, embracing everyday subject matter while also being funny, starring none other than Grace Passô and Renato Novaes. It was one of my favorite films of the year and the biggest surprise of that edition of the festival. That same day, I also had my first experience with the Minas Gerais-based production company Filmes de Plástico, which has increasingly come to represent Brazil at international festivals and is consistently responsible for some of the best films of the year.

With its premiere and acclaim at the Berlin Film Festival in February this year, If I Were Alive emerges from a difficult place for the filmmaker, who works with the theme of grief. An eternal feeling that remains present in some way regardless of how much time has passed, grief inspired the narrative following the death of the director's mother, actress Maria José Novais Oliveira, who appeared in many of his films - Backyard, She Comes Back on Thursday, Long Way Home, among others.

The fragmented narrative and the significant leap in time are surprises in the director's approach, running counter to his usual style. The entire opening sequence, set in the 1970s and shot on 16mm film, not only evokes an atmosphere belonging to the period depicted, but also features handheld camerawork and increasingly closer shots of the young protagonists. The excellent dance scene is one of many unforgettable moments, with everything from the production design to the dialogue featuring period slang, the cinematography, the distinctive costumes and hairstyles, and the heat of a Friday-night party, complete with music that helps bring it all together. These elements reflect a passion that materializes even more powerfully when the narrative moves into the future. The transition comes as a surprise - not because the film jumps to the present, fifty years into the future, but because of how it happens, amid the tension of a suspense sequence with science fiction elements, as the characters run through the undergrowth after spotting a suspicious figure.

For much of what follows, the film takes the familiar paths of André Novais's cinema. We are introduced to the same couple, now in their old age - Gilberto, played by the director's father, Norberto Novais Oliveira, and Jacira, portrayed by the celebrated writer Conceição Evaristo. Returning to his almost always static camera, long contemplative shots, and dialogues about life, the director places death among the subjects that surround the couple, who are inseparable, have been married for forty years, and have been together for more than fifty. The humor emerges from everyday life, from this old, enduring relationship, from how well they know each other and how much they care for one another, especially when it comes to their health, which is already showing signs of fragility. The couple's peaceful life at the height of retirement could, in itself, sustain an entire film (and I would easily watch it with all my heart), with its long shots of them simply talking about the past, gossiping about friends and acquaintances, and fantasizing about fate, in sequences where the camera remains fixed in the distance, following the characters as they walk until they leave the frame, minutes later.

A change in tone, however, once again catches the viewer by surprise when a health emergency involving Jacira opens the door for fantasy to become a permanent part of the narrative. The realistic approach gives way to situations that initially flirt with horror, even if they never fully enter the genre, which is not the film's intention. The sense of estrangement created by the abrupt rupture of this relationship, rooted in an inability to communicate and in the wife's "zombified" behavior, becomes the true starting point for a great metaphor.

The director never intends to explain materially, through dialogue, what is happening on screen. The journey that follows this upheaval in the couple's home and relationship, taking Gilberto far away from his own house, adopts a metaphorical tone, suggesting an acceptance of the present and the future, and of a different reality. Jacira's absence is deeply felt, given how genuine the couple's dynamic in front of the camera is, a great credit to the performers, especially as Norberto Novais's bewilderment becomes unmistakable on his face, with the actor carrying the second part of the film on his own.

When it comes to the subject of aliens, the way the direction imagines extraterrestrials through the established lens of popular culture is delightful, drawing on references ranging from M. Night Shyamalan's Signs to the soundtrack and visual design of creatures and spaceships typical of the 1950s, yet reworking them in its own way. What matters, in fact, is not the extraterrestrials themselves, but what they represent in the character's journey and what they reveal about his actual health condition, leading to a devastating ending that nevertheless retains the comedic tone adopted by the film.

If I Were Alive not only further proves André Novais's versatility and inventiveness as a director, particularly when experimenting with science fiction, fantasy, and certain elements of horror, but also reveals much about his sensitivity as a person, transforming the film into an exercise in therapy as well. Although divided into distinct narrative moments that are entirely different from one another, the filmmaker never loses his sense of rhythm or inventiveness in telling the story through its various stylistic transitions, with all of them remaining parts of a larger whole.

At the end of the screening, after much laughter, tears, and applause, André Novais said something memorable, as poetic as his work, from its title to its entirety: "grief can accommodate unreal things, from a hole in the back to a flying saucer." It was a true cinematic experience and the best film at this year's São Paulo International Film Festival so far.
