ย
ย
ย
ย
ย
ย
ย

English review
ย
Beneath multiple layers of manipulation, Unidentified Murderย adopts a multi-perspective structure that gradually snowballs into a whirlwind of twists involving aliens, social media, comedy, and a two-decade-old mystery.

It is practically impossible not to draw at least a loose connection between the opening sequence of Unidentified Murderย and the classic 1990s American television series The X-Files. The generic image of extraterrestrials as we commonly imagine them today is undeniably derived from - if not created, certainly popularized by - Chris Carter's series, depicting gray-skinned, humanoid creatures with oversized dark eyes. At first, the low-quality artificial intelligence-generated images used to illustrate the backstory that drives the narrative raised some concerns, but they ultimately make perfect sense once it becomes clear that the entire opening sequence is actually part of an internet program dedicated to extraterrestrial life and alien encounters.
ย
It is through this show that we meet the two protagonists, who, twenty-five years earlier as children, witnessed an alien abduction in a forest outside Hong Kong - an event that not only shaped the rest of their lives as one of the region's greatest unsolved mysteries, but also resulted in the disappearance of their best friend, Ho. Every hallmark of a classic abduction case appears in their testimony, from the blinding light to the unexplained missing hour they can barely remember.
ย
Beginning as a screenlife film, shifting between a computer monitor broadcasting the internet show and the cellphone of one protagonist's girlfriend, the film abandons that format within minutes in favor of a constantly moving handheld camera that stays close to the action like a documentary, filled with close-ups and frequent zooms that relentlessly follow the characters. In the days leading up to the anniversary of the incident - the central day on which the film unfolds - the narrative embraces a structure inspired by Rashomon, repeatedly advancing to certain points only to circle back through digressions, revisiting the same events from different perspectives.
ย
It does not take long for the film to reveal itself as a genuine comedy of errors, built upon layers of manipulation involving simultaneous prank attempts, hidden agendas, and an ever-growing web of causal connections linking two different timelines - past and present - gradually uncovering concealed truths and facts hidden beneath the stories being told.
ย
As an openly manipulative blend of thriller, comedy, and science fiction, its mysteries are not limited solely to the characters themselves. Directors Kwok Ka-Hei and Jack Lee Chun-Kit (the latter making his feature directorial debut after serving as assistant director on the excellent Stuntman, which screened at last year's Fantasia Festival and was previously reviewed here) clearly demonstrate an interest in extending that same confusion to the audience. They construct the narrative like an elaborate puzzle whose pieces are revealed little by little, rewarding viewers who attempt to deduce what is truly unfolding on screen as each layer of deception is stripped away, allowing the truth to emerge from a snowball of events far more intricate than it initially appears.
ย
The editing by Chun-Kong Kwok and Man-Kit Li also deserves much of the credit for the film's success, skillfully inserting its digressions and shifting perspectives at precisely the right moments to maximize surprise. By initially implying certain resolutions before later revealing them in full detail, the editing allows every narrative thread to fall creatively into place, ultimately reshaping the audience's understanding of the entire story.
ย
Most interesting of all, however, is that Unidentified Murderย becomes far more than simply another manipulative thriller. Through protagonists who have built public identities on the internet and rely on online platforms for their livelihoods - an idea that admittedly could have been explored in greater depth - the film examines the contradictions between the personalities people project in front of the camera and who they truly are behind it, while simultaneously reflecting on the lies manufactured for the sake of going viral. Beneath its surface, it offers a thoughtful meditation on online distrust while demonstrating the enduring power of deception across decades, both before and after the rise of social media.
