English review

On Behalf of My Son is an exercise in humanity by Gabriel Martins, in which Rejane Faria shines in her best performance in cinema to date.

Gabriel Martins is a director who, like few others, is capable of working with emotions in front of the camera in incredibly singular ways. In The Heart of the World, co-directed alongside his brother, Maurílio, he turns his gaze toward a lower-middle class that finds no opportunities to rise socially, trapped on the outskirts of cities like slaves to a corporate world, finding in crime a possible way out, at least as a starting point. In Mars One, meanwhile, he expands this gaze into the family, amid a generational battle established between different worldviews manifested by parents and children, and the love that exists between them, as they seek to fulfill their dreams and find in their union a way to survive the world. All of this in modestly budgeted films, produced with heart and soul far from the Rio-São Paulo axis, in the welcoming state of Minas Gerais.

In On Behalf of My Son, Gabriel Martins' gaze shifts toward a somewhat different context. The opening scene foreshadows a tragedy. There is a certain tension in the way the camera moves through the interior of the bus, without necessarily needing to say or show anything abnormal along the vehicle's route. The way the camera focuses a little on each person inside the vehicle conveys a sense of intersecting lives, about to be united by a common event. It is precisely when the accident occurs that the entire narrative begins.

The pain of such a sudden loss is neither a moment nor an easy situation to absorb. When she is informed of the event, and watches on television as her son's name is identified as responsible for the deaths of so many people, Vicentina, as a devoted mother, is devastated - after all, it is not grief alone, but also the feeling that her loved one, albeit unintentionally, has led other families into the same valley of sadness, making them go through the same stages. What is one to do in such circumstances?

Rejane Faria embodies this woman placed in an unfortunate position by fate, with feelings that no mother should ever have to experience for even a single day of her life. At first, the feature explores the doubt she feels and carries with her regarding the events she has just experienced, and how to deal with the guilt over something that was not necessarily her responsibility. Her thoughts lead her to question motherhood, raising children, the dynamics within the home, and whether she truly knew Wesley, already an adult, in his forties, and living with her.

The damage is irreparable - she knows this as well as the relatives of any of the other victims. What the film, however, directs our attention toward is precisely the family member of the person who caused the accident, maintaining a kind of mystery about what really happened, impossible to solve and not really an object of interest for the narrative either, except on occasional opportunities when it demonstrates attentiveness in trying to understand who Wesley was.

When Vicentina then decides to meet with the loved ones of the other lives lost in the accident, the camera follows her on a journey through grief and her own way of overcoming it. The expression of pain, guilt, and above all empathy toward others becomes the driving force behind the construction of this deeply human character, who, in order to overcome her own grief, or at least try to move forward, simply wishes to speak with the families, apologize for something that, deep down, is not her responsibility (my personal opinion, as someone without a place of speech in this particular situation), and transform this individual pain into something that can perhaps be overcome collectively.

This apology at no point seeks to point fingers or look for those responsible for the accident - on the contrary, it comes from a desire to listen, to hear others, and to embrace other people, without knowing that they need this gesture to process what happened. The various reactions of the people she encounters are part of the exercise in humanity that Vicentina has decided to undertake, and which she subjects herself to by listening to the different words of these people, each dealing with the path placed before them by life in their own way.

With great naturalness, Rejane inhabits this character permeated by the delicacy of a gaze, and by a body language that says far more than any dialogue could express. Her slow walk through the city, from one side to the other, accompanied by her cane, reveals a physical effort that transforms the mission she has set for herself into a true odyssey, but also one of the few and only ways of accepting what happened - in the name of her son, but above all, for herself.

Martins establishes creative visual parallels in this character's journey as she experiences the pain of grief - while at the funeral she walks from right to left, at the conclusion of her journey she returns to a possible place of peace, perhaps a status quo, with the camera once again moving laterally, but this time from left to right. The visual rhyme transforms the overcoming of this pain into an exercise in humanity, in flavors that progressively shift from bitter to sweet, and at times even suddenly.

It is yet another very powerful work produced by Filmes de Plástico, responsible for bringing peripheral voices, and cinema made by Black people, from the interior of Minas Gerais to Brazil and the world beyond. Not only is it a great source of pride for us, as Brazilians, to premiere in TIFF's Platform section, but it is also a strong representative of our country at the festival - one that made me shed tears more than once, just as Gabriel Martins had already proven he knew how to do masterfully since Mars One.
