30º FANTASIA FILM FESTIVAL | EDITORIAL: Desataques e expectativas para a edição!

O 30º Fantasia Film Festival acontece em Montreal, Quebec, no Canadá, entre os dias 16 de julho e 02 de agosto. Expectativas para a cobertura deste ano e minha paixão pelo cinema fantástico.

Creio que a essa altura do campeonato, em quase sete anos de Cineolhar, já está mais do que clara e declarada minha paixão pelo cinema fantástico, certo? Tanto eu tenho carinho pelo cinema de gênero que minha primeira cobertura de festival, em 2020, foi justamente do Cinefantasy, o festival de cinema fantástico de São Paulo, minha cidade (que inclusive terá sua próxima edição em breve!).

Só esse ano, já estive na cobertura online do Overlook Film Festival, e presencial do Fantaspoa, ambas em abril, e agora é a vez da cobertura, online, do Fantasia Film Festival, que acontece presencialmente, na cidade de Montreal, Canadá, entre 16 de julho e 02 de agosto.

É meu segundo ano no Fantasia, em cobertura online. Na edição de 2025, tive a oportunidade de assistir a alguns dos meus filmes favoritos do ano – entre eles, THE SCHOOL DUEL, SHAM, UNDERTONE (todos com críticas por aqui inclusive – clique aqui para ler).

Infelizmente, ainda não consegui estar presencialmente no festival, mas terei acesso a uma seleção online, e trarei para vocês críticas em primeira mão dos próximos lançamentos do mundo do terror, thriller, fantasia e ficção científica!

Nesta publicação editorial, então, de forma curta e descontraída, gostaria de comentar rapidamente sobre alguns filmes que chamaram minha atenção, e que eu adoraria que aparecessem na seleção online (vamos torcer).

Na abertura, o novo filme de Nicolas Winding Refn HER PRIVAT HELL fará sua première canadense, após a estreia mundial no Festival de Cannes, em maio. Já no encerramento, FREAKS PART II, de Zach Lipovsky e Adam Stein finalizam a edição.

O diretor japonês Takashi Shimizu, responsável pelo clássicos O GRITO (tanto da versão original japonesa, de 2002, quanto sua refilmagem norte-americana, em 2004) fará a première mundial de VILLAGE OF EIGHT GRAVESTONES, e a première canadense de THE MOUTHS.

O cinema de Kiyoshi Kurosawa também será representado pelo seu mais novo filme, THE SAMURAI AND THE PRISONER, épico histórico em sua première norte-americana, após exibição no Festival de Cannes.

Neste ano, também haverá Brasil nas telas do Fantasia, com o terror PRIVADAS DE SUAS VIDAS, dirigido por Gustavo Vinagre e Gurcius Gewdner; e a animação PAPAYA, de Priscilla Kellen – e desde já digo estar ansioso para assistir a ambos!

A China igualmente estará presente, com a exibição de BLADES OF THE GUARDIANS, dirigido por um dos mestres do Wuxia de Hong Kong Yuen Wo-Ping – não apenas responsável por obras primas do gênero, como também deixou sua marca em Hollywood com as coreografias de ação em MATRIX. No mais, algumas críticas já estão prontas – como do thriller dramático canadense THE PARKING SLOT, de Louis Godbout –, e outros filmes já estão prontos, na minha fila para serem assistidos – como NIGHTBORN, novo terror da cineasta finlandesa Hanna Bergholm, com Ruper Grint no elenco; e o terror queer NO REST FOR THE WICKED, de Kasper Kalle.

Esses são só alguns dos muitos filmes do Fantasia que me chamaram a atenção. Quais outros da seleção vocês estão curiosos para ver?

The 30th Fantasia Film Festival takes place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, from July 16 to August 2. Here are my expectations for this year's coverage and why fantastic cinema continues to be one of my greatest passions.

I think that, after nearly seven years of Cineolhar, my passion for fantastic cinema is already more than obvious, isn't it? I care so deeply about genre cinema that my very first festival coverage, back in 2020, was of Cinefantasy, São Paulo's fantastic film festival - my hometown's festival (which, incidentally, will soon return for another edition!).

This year alone, I have already covered the Overlook Film Festival online and Fantaspoa in person, both in April. Now it is time for my online coverage of the Fantasia Film Festival, which takes place in person in the city of Montreal, Canada, from July 16 to August 3.

This will be my second year covering Fantasia remotely. During the 2025 edition, I had the opportunity to watch some of my favorite films of the year - among them THE SCHOOL DUEL, SHAM, and UNDERTONE (all of which I reviewed here on Cineolhar as well).

Unfortunately, I have not yet had the opportunity to attend the festival in person, but I will once again have access to an online selection and will bring you first impressions and reviews of upcoming horror, thriller, fantasy, and science fiction releases.

So, in this short and informal editorial, I would like to briefly highlight a few films that immediately caught my attention, and that I sincerely hope will be included in the online lineup (fingers crossed).

Opening the festival will be Nicolas Winding Refn's new film, HER PRIVAT HELL, making its Canadian premiere following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Closing the festival will be FREAKS PART II, directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein.

Japanese filmmaker Takashi Shimizu, best known for the JU-ON / THE GRUDGE franchise (both the original 2002 Japanese film and its 2004 American remake), will present the world premiere of VILLAGE OF EIGHT GRAVESTONES, as well as the Canadian premiere of THE MOUTHS.

The cinema of Kiyoshi Kurosawa will also be represented by his latest feature, THE SAMURAI AND THE PRISONER, a historical epic making its North American premiere after screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

Brazil will also be represented at this year's Fantasia, with the horror film PRIVADAS DE SUAS VIDAS, directed by Gustavo Vinagre and Gurcius Gewdner, as well as the animated feature PAPAYA, directed by Priscilla Kellen - and I can already say that I am genuinely looking forward to both.

China will likewise be present with BLADES OF THE GUARDIANS, directed by one of Hong Kong's great Wuxia masters, Yuen Woo-ping - not only the filmmaker behind several masterpieces of the genre, but also the legendary action choreographer responsible for films such as THE MATRIX. Beyond that, several reviews are already finished - including the Canadian dramatic thriller THE PARKING SLOT, directed by Louis Godbout - while many other films are already waiting in my screening queue, such as NIGHTBORN, the new horror film from Finnish director Hanna Bergholm starring Rupert Grint, and the queer horror film NO REST FOR THE WICKED, directed by Kasper Kalle.

These are just a few of the many Fantasia titles that immediately caught my attention. Which films from this year's lineup are you most excited to see?
