48º CINEMA DU RÉEL | COMPILADO – “Blind Song” e “Another Earth”

Blind Song (Um Chant Aveugle, 2026)

A partir do diálogo com uma musicista cega, a dupla de cineastas Stefano Canapa e Natacha Muslera nos levam a uma experiência sensorial pelas sensações da entrevistada. Entrecortando trechos sob uma completa ausência de luz ou imagem, e flashes de filmagens captadas, preto e branco e colorido, como um retrato da relação passado-presente de um coral de musicistas mulheres, em uma tradição medieval que não mais existe.

Blind Song basicamente caminha para, por um breve momento, restaurar esse grupo, registrar novas experiências, como uma ponte temporal. Fato é que a ideia se esgota rapidamente pela fórmula adotada, um tanto repetitiva, mas segue interessante até a catarse final, quando é dito "a escuridão existe, mas não está mais lá". É a música fazendo seu papel.

Through a dialogue with a blind musician, the filmmaking duo Stefano Canapa and Natacha Muslera lead us into a sensory experience shaped by the interviewee’s perceptions. Intercutting passages marked by a complete absence of light or image with flashes of captured footage - both black-and-white and in color - the film unfolds as a portrait of the past-present relationship of a choir of female musicians, rooted in a medieval tradition that no longer exists.

At its core, Blind Song moves toward, for a brief moment, restoring this group - documenting new experiences as a kind of temporal bridge. The fact is that the idea quickly exhausts itself due to the somewhat repetitive formula it adopts, yet it remains engaging up to its final catharsis, when it is said, “darkness exists, but it is no longer there.” It is music fulfilling its role.

É muito fácil apontar o dedo e falar que "guerras são ruins" e "o ser humano está se matando" enquanto recita poemas e, literalmente, rola pelo feed de uma rede social com notícias e publicações com o olhar de apenas um lado ideológico referente aos conflitos globais travados no presente momento - algo muito mais complexo do que qualquer vídeo de Instagram e TikTok pode revelar.

Certamente a arte encontra papel fundamental no debate político e social, como um reflexo do mundo em que vivemos, mas Ben Russell nada reflete em seu curta experimental Another Earth. Cenas de mortes, destruições e violência são mostradas ao fundo da tela, mas sem propriamente um debate que não vá além de que falar o quão ruim é o homem enquanto, ao invés de unir, mata seus iguais em busca de poder. É um curta cuja mensagem nunca escapa do óbvio, algo que vê e se fala quando se toma nota pela primeira vez do mundo como sempre foi - e de fato, nunca aprendemos a conviver em sociedade harmonicamente (e duvido que um dia aprendamos).

Agora, só falar que é ruim mas não se aprofundar no debate ao conflito criticado é uma prova da ausência de ideias, criatividade ou argumentos do próprio realizador, limitado a repetir tudo igual ao longo dos onze minutos de sua obra. Só rolar redes sociais não fará do mundo um lugar melhor - pelo contrário, apenas te torna conivente à realidade.

It is very easy to point fingers and say that “wars are bad” and that “human beings are killing each other” while reciting poems and, quite literally, scrolling through a social media feed filled with news and posts filtered through a single ideological perspective on the global conflicts unfolding today - something far more complex than any Instagram or TikTok video could ever convey.

Art certainly plays a fundamental role in political and social debate, serving as a reflection of the world we live in, but Ben Russell reflects nothing of the sort in his experimental short Another Earth. Scenes of death, destruction, and violence appear in the background, yet without any real engagement with the subject beyond stating the obvious: that humanity is cruel, that instead of uniting, we kill one another in the pursuit of power. It is a film whose message never escapes the obvious - something one realizes upon first becoming aware of the world as it has always been. Indeed, we have never learned to live harmoniously in society (and it is doubtful that we ever will).

Simply stating that something is wrong without delving deeper into the conflict being criticized is, in itself, evidence of a lack of ideas, creativity, or argument on the part of the filmmaker, who remains limited to repeating the same point throughout the eleven minutes of the piece. Scrolling through social media will not make the world a better place - on the contrary, it merely renders you complicit in its reality.
